With so many different versions of popular Christmas songs existing in the world today, the challenge for artists who want to release a festive song or album is to stand out, to give listeners something new. Upon listening to a new Christmas album, A Drummer Boy Christmas, from for KING & COUNTRY, anyone can see that this is something special.

When for KING & COUNTRY released a Christmas EP in 2013, fans fell in love with the band’s theatrical and drum-heavy rendition of “Little Drummer Boy.” After years of requests, and after their performance of “Little Drummer Boy” on CMA Country Christmas last year went viral, the band finally gave fans a long-awaited, full-length Christmas album.

“Little Drummer Boy” is of course featured on A Drummer Boy Christmas, plus other well-known songs like “Joy to the World” and “Silent Night,” each with signature for KING & COUNTRY flair. “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” is a special treat: it’s a collaboration with NEEDTOBREATHE, and listeners will be quick to recognize frontman Bear Rinehart’s raspy voice starting in the second verse. 

But what makes this album truly unique is the use of monologues. “Won’t You Come” is an interlude that begins with a reading of Isaiah 9, and the music in the background gives a sense of anticipation. Then there’s “A Christmas Monologue,” a modern contemplation of the significance of Jesus’ birth. These moments provide opportunities for reflection and serve as a reminder of why we celebrate this season.
