Hudsonville Challenged for Serving God

The Freedom from Religion Foundation is urging Hudsonville, Mich., to remove from its website a reference to city officials striving ā€œto serve God.ā€

The foundation sent a letter to Mayor Don VanDoeselaar, asking the city to remove the reference to God from its mission statement.

The foundationā€™s co-president, Annie Laurie Gaylor, said the group sent the letter after it received a complaint from a Hudsonville resident.

She wrote VanDoeselaar that it ā€œis not the business of a city in our secular republic to ā€˜strive to serve God.ā€™ā€

ā€œA city should have no religious beliefs,ā€ Gaylor said in the letter.

Update: After consulting an attorney, the mayor of Hudsonville recently announced that the phrase ā€œto serve Godā€ will not be removed from its mission statement.
