Seventy-two teens from Christian Reformed churches in southwest Montana spent a week in July in San Francisco, spreading compassion in Jesus’ name.

The group split up into five work crews. One crew ran a vacation Bible school at Temple Baptist Church and painted and cleaned at St. Joseph Catholic Charities, an emergency homeless shelter.

Another group worked at the San Francisco Food Bank, packing food into individual boxes for senior citizens, and at Page Street Kids Club.

Other crews worked at a housing project run by the Roman Catholic Church or volunteered at a hospital for AIDS and Alzheimer’s patients. Many patients at that hospital never have visitors.

“The nurses and residents could not believe that we would take a week out of our summer to come to San Francisco to be like Jesus and serve others,” said Kayla Dyksterhouse.

Danielle Swets added, “Being here made me so thankful for the love of family and friends.”

“Some have said that San Francisco is a godless city, but from what I saw, God is working [here] every day,” said Drew Hoekema.
