Two West Michigan Christian high schools captured state championships this spring. The girlsā track team at South Christian High School, Cutlerville, hooked its first Michigan championship, and the girlsā soccer team at Unity Christian High School, Hudsonville, won its second consecutive state title.
The South Christian Sailors beat out nine other Division II teams. Freshman Kelsey Burgess enjoyed running track. āItās fun to run competitively,ā she said. āWhen you run, you think abut doing your best. Youāre using your abilities from God.ā
The Unity team scored a 1-0 victory to capture the Division III soccer title, despite graduating half its championship team last year. Even after winning two years in a row, Coach Randy Heethuis said, āThe girls were extremely humble. Coaches and officials comment that they play in the spirit of true sportsmanship. It doesnāt take long for other people who watch to see that thereās something different about these girls.ā
