For the past few years, high school students in Susan Van Geestās art class have found a way to share what theyāve learned in the Today devotional by using photography.
Every week, youāll find Van Geestās students at Avail Academy in Edina, Minn., outside taking pictures.
āUsing photography,ā Van Geest said, āstudents seek and capture the beauty around them as a way to open their eyes to the abundance of Godās beauty.ā
For a special assignment, Van Geestās class partnered with Today, the daily devotional produced by ReFrame Ministries, the media ministry of the Christian Reformed Church and read by almost half a million people every day.
At the end of 2023, Van Geest challenged her students to read the December devotional series āGod with Us,ā written by Joe Huizenga, pastor and executive director of Roseland Christian Ministries in Chicago. In the introduction to the series, Huizenga invited readers to āslow down and reflect on how the love of God in Christ Jesus being lived out in the neighborhoods and communities that you are a part of.ā
With this challenge in mind, students photographed what they saw and then wrote reflections about how their everyday lives intersected with the devotions.
āI learned how to connect and be covered in Godās beauty,ā said student Sophia Kruger. āIām surrounded, Iām drowning in the glory of God at all times. I just have to open my eyes.ā
You can find several of the reflections and a video about the project at TodayDevotional.com/Avail.
āAs you look at the photographs and read the reflections,ā said Today managing editor Jeff Bulthuis, āI hope you are encouraged by how young people in our Today community are engaging with Godās Word. I hope their reflections and faith inspire you as you interact with Godās Word this year.ā
