Sister Act meets āGleeā in a mess of a movie. A small town suffering economic woes puts its hope in the church gospel choir as it moves up into national competition, and the choir itself is divided over staying with traditional music or turning to pop. Interestingly, Motown music returns to its gospel roots, as when āSigned, Sealed, Deliveredā becomes āHere I am Lord, signed, sealed delivered, Iām yours!ā While there are a few brief moments of sincere talk of faith, these moments are lost in a jumble of slapstick humor, mixed-up morality, and oddly interjected sexual content. Great acting by Queen Latifah (Chicago) and Keke Palmer (Akeelah and the Bee) canāt save , nor can the ever-buoyant Dolly Parton. Go see a real gospel choir instead. (Warner Bros.)
